Hearty goodness! Braised bratwurst stew in 40 minutes

Hey, I admit this doesn't look pretty but let me tell you - it is just the ticket for a cool evening - it packs a punch of wholesome goodness and flavour.... it's also a great boost for the immune system if you're unwell, even though, it has BEER in it.  Yes.  Beer!

Hubby and I visited a local german deli/bakery called Brot and Wurst (hey, how 'bout that?) which with hubby's growing up with german heritage he loooooves this stuff.  We picked up some bratwurst and I found myself thinking 'hmmm now what?' when we got home.

So this one is a typical German type meal, easy to prepare and gets the most out of the flavour of the bratwurst.  You can get bratwurst at some supermarkets, butchers and deli's - give it a try!

Ingredients:
5 bratwurst sausages
1 cup chopped white onion
1 cup chopped peeled carrot
1 cup chopped peeled apple
1 tb caraway seeds
375ml german (or any other) stout - I used Erdinger
1/2 cabbage, cored and sliced

Method:
Pour 3/4 cup water in a large pot and bring to the boil.  Add bratwurst sausages and boil until water is almost evaporated (about 5-10 minutes) and then remove the sausages and set aside.

Add the onions to the pot and cook until transparent, add carrot and apple and cook until apple softens slightly. Add caraway seeds and then half the beer.

Put the cabbage on top, then pour the rest of the beer over the top.  Put a lid on your pot and turn heat down to simmer.

Whilst pot is simmering in a frypan or skillet, fry the sausages and then cut them into bite size pieces.
Add back to your pot, which by now your cabbage should have wilted.  (If not, put the lid back on and check in 5 minutes)

Serve!

My husband LOVES bratwurst. I will have to save this one for giving it a go when it gets a bit cooler on this side of the world!

I will have to try this one. Brat and Wurst is just down the road from me and my hubby seems to hang out there quite a bit and talk about meat smoking, sausage making and the like the lovely owners. He is also a brewer so I am sure the the added beer will entice him.
