I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness, so I don't have any traditions to tell you about, but I can tell you that I left the religion long ago. I now have a 10 month old and am looking forward to starting some family christmas traditions of our own.
A favourite tradition I remember from when I was little would have to be leaving homemade shortbread and a beer for Santa and hay for the reindeer's! And being amazed that it was gone in the morning! We are now starting this tradition with our little girls!! Little kids put the magic back in Christmas! xox
It would be the big tray of goodies left for santa. Including, a piece of chocolate mudcake, carrots, anzac cookies, milk, Orange Juice and Coke.
Also another is random presents spreading throughout the day from Santa :D
When my kids were younger (they're12 & 11 now) they loved making magical reindeer food.
Simply rolled oats, mixed with hundreds & thousands!
They would fuss getting the mix just right for the reindeers otherwise they get a tummy ache!
We always had to wait for everyone to be awake before we could open our presents and we did it one person at a time, then it was time for breakfast!
I must be insane. We have 3 naughty elves visit us each december. Apparently they just get in Santas way, so he drops them off to us to look after. But they get into mischief every night...flour all over the kitchen, painting hubbies toenails while he sleeps, photocopying thier butts on our printer. Every.Single.Night. The kids are absolutely amazed and thrilled by them. I'm just tired.
Well I dont know if this is a tradition by anyone else's standards, but growing up our Christmas tree was not complete until we had hung chocolate Christmas decorations on it too. You aren't allowed to eat any though til Christmas day.
I'm going to get some and put them on our Christmas tree now and hope my boys let them last til Christmas day!
My favourite Christmas tradition that we've started since having children is a day in the city. We visit the Myer Christmas windows, Myer's Santa-land, the Christmas display at Crown Casino. We go just after an early dinner, and wander through the city watching everything light up as dusk falls. It's such a magical family outing, I look forward to it every year!
Christmas is my favourite time of the year! I loved as a kid when Mum got our Christmas pillowcases out on the 1st of December. We were so excited as we put them on our bed as it heralded the countdown to Christmas.
A new favourite now that we have children is a tour of all the Christmas lights! Having grown up in the country and when lights weren't really the in thing, I just love this annual trip too!!! We dress the girls in their pj's and off we go :-)
My favourite xmas tradition is reading 'The Night Before Christmas' on xmas eve, then putting out the water bucket for the reindeer and a drink for Santa (used to be a beer, that's probably non-PC these days!).
These are so cute and the snowflake cookie cutter would be perfect for the mince pies I want to make this Christmas (instead of cutting a star for the top!).
Every year since I remember my family have a Christmas carols and drinks night where my mum, sister and I (and any other people who want to join in) form a band to play carols which people sing along to. Sometimes a little alcohol is needed but everyone gets into it and really enjoys the night!
Definitely my favourite christmas tradition would be this little book we read, "The First Christmas". It's for kids, and it's REALLY simplistic, but it's beautiful! We read it every year on Christmas Eve when we open our presents from our family. :-)
My favourite Xmas tradition was going to my Grandma's house and all the kids would gather outside at night while Santa would bring all of the presents!
Our family tradition passed on by many generations is a steam fruit pudding for dessert with 5 cent pieces put in it randomly, along with custard and ice cream. Obviously the money has been boiled to clean and it is only given to age appropriate kids and adults. It is always lots of fun counting your money afterwards.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, my mother would help my brother and I make a home-made decoration to go on the tree. Sometimes out of baked playdough, sometimes a drawing stuck onto cardboard, and sometimes something so complicated she was up until all hours swearing over her sewing machine to finish it for us.
Now the family Christmas tree is full of much loved tatty decorations just full of years of memories.
I'm starting small with my little ones: sticking some printed out clipart onto cardboard to hang up.
I don't think my family did the same thing on any two Christmases! haha :) I suppose there were some recurring themes, namely that we never had a plastic tree, my dad usually went and got a pine tree for us, and we had cold lunches, like seafood, ham and salads rather than roasts. Since I've been living out of home though we've had a plastic tree (I wouldn't have a clue where to find a pine that I'm allowed to cut down lol) and eating lunch at one in-laws or the other's. This year is the first year that we'll be having Christmas lunch at mine and my partner's place, with my family coming here.

One of my favourite Christmas traditions is the making of the Christmas pudding. My mother has made it for as long as I can remember. We would all have a turn stirring the pudding, and while we stirred we make a wish for the coming year. Now that my siblings and I have grown up and moved away from home, we still get a phone call from my mother sometime in November or December to say that she's making the pudding. She stirs while we make a wish. It's very sweet and has come to mark the beginning of Christmas festivities for me.
I remember making Christmas decorations with Mum when we were little (and Dad was away working long hours harvesting)and these decorations still hang proudly on both Mum and Dad's Christmas tree and now on mine too. This year is the first year that I am starting to make some decorations with the girls and its very exciting. In years to come they too will get some of the decorations off our tree to start their own collections, just like I did when I first left home!
Our family tradition when I was younger was we attended Midnight Mass. I would usually do a small dance performance during the mass to one of the carols as well. When we went home we were allowed to open 1 or 2 presents & then it was bedtime. I think mum & dad did this so we could "sleep in" & not be up at the crack of dawn to open gifts lol. Now with young children of my own we haven't yet gone to the Midnight Mass as they are too oung but hope to do it once they are older :)

Our Christmas tradition as children was to open our stocking first on christmas morning (so mum and dad didn't have to get up at 5am!) and then open gifts and have breakfast as a family. Now with our own children we video tape our christmas day, opening gifts etc so that Daddy who sadly is most the time at the work can share in the excitement when he gets home.

A tradition I started with my girls (that I never had when growing up in Msia) is the Advent calendar box - filled with mixture of lollies, chocolates and little tasks in preparation for Advent and Christmas.
Another tradition that I have fond memories of and which I now do with our girls is an advent calendar. I remember when I was little they just had a lovely picture behind each number!!! My girls have one hand made by my mum which has pockets in it that I put "treasures" in!! I think as they are still quite young they are more interested in the chocolate, toy, sticker etc rather than the actual count down!!!
